Pearlite (or perlite) and ferrite (or limonite) are names used for two different minerals. The difference between pearlite and ferrite can be seen in their physical features and how they are used.

  1. Ferrite

    • Ferrite is a term for a group of minerals, each made of ferric oxide chemically combined with one or several other metals (including aluminum iron, magnesium, manganese, barium ,cobalt, copper or nickel). They are polycrystalline (made of lots of small crystals.)

    Pearlite

    • Pearlite is a kind of obsidian (volcanic glass) that appears as small, pearl-shaped globs. It contains a high amount of water and expands when heated. When it formed, it cooled to quickly to form crystals.

    Function

    • Pearlite is used for such things as packing material, insulation and as a dirt conditioner. Ferrite is used for technological items such as magnets and electronics.
