Eating the right diet is important for those who are trying to build muscle. The typical bodybuilding diet includes several meals eaten throughout the day that consist of protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates that help grow and repair the muscles.

  1. Protein/Carbohydrate/Fat Ratio

    • Having the right ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat is important when trying to build muscle mass. The ideal percentage is 20 to 50 percent protein, 30 to 60 percent carbohydrates, and 20 to 30 percent fat. Protein shakes and supplements may be used to ensure that this ratio is reached.

    Meal Frequency

    • The typical bodybuilder will eat five to six meals a day, rather than three big meals, in order to keep his body in an anabolic state, which builds muscle tissue.

    Water

    • When following an intense bodybuilding routine, drinking plenty of water is crucial. Water helps with important functions such as muscle building and fat burning. A bodybuilder should drink at least one gallon of water every day.
