In 2008, 5,025 occupants of pickup trucks died in traffic accidents according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Crash test scores indicate how safe a vehicle is when you are considering how to protect yourself on the road.

Tests and Ratings

IIHS testing looks at front, side, rollover and rear crashes. Trucks receive a crash rating from best to worst of "good," "acceptable," "marginal" or "poor" for each crash scenario.
Canyon

The 2010 GMC Canyon Crew Cab ranked fifth among other small pickups by the IIHS. It failed to record a good grade in any crash test. The Canyon graded acceptable for frontal crashes, poor for side crashes and marginal for rollover and rear crashes.

Sierra

For large pickup testing only frontal, side and rear crash tests were scored. The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 ranked fourth among other large pick ups. It received a good rating for frontal crashes and acceptable for side and rear crashes.
