Staph in a Puppy
Staphylococcal, or staph, infections are caused by the staphylococcus bacteria. This bacteria affects the skin and causes a dermatologic condition called pyoderma. Staph infections are usually the symptom of an underlying medical condition.

Symptoms

According to the All About Dogs by Lowchens Australia website, the earliest symptom of a bacterial staph infection is pus-filled pimples on the dog's skin. These itchy pustules ooze and crust as the condition advances, causing redness, hair loss, and an unpleasant odor. The condition usually affects the trunk, but puppies often develop pyoderma on their bellies, elbows, and between their toes.
Causes

Most dogs with bacterial pyoderma have an underlying condition that causes the infection. Candace A. Sousa, DVM, of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners explains that dogs with this condition often suffer from endocrine-related disorders, allergies, or weak immune systems. Other conditions that contribute to pyoderma include mite infestations, such as demodex mange or scabies.

Treatment

Pyoderma may recur if the underlying condition is not addressed. Antiseptic and antibiotic shampoos provide relief from the itching and inflammation. The infection itself is treated with oral or topical antibiotics, depending upon the severity of the condition.
