Computers are designed to run software, or a collection of programs that provide the computer with instructions. These software programs can also enhance computer functionality for the user. One brand of software that offered new spreadsheet formats and other applications was Lotus software.

Lotus software is a brand of software applications developed by Lotus Software, formerly known as Lotus Development Corporation before being acquired by IBM.

Lotus software products included Lotus 1-2-3, a spreadsheet software application that also featured pop-up menus a user could activate via the keyboard, as well as one-key, or function, commands. Other Lotus software applications included Lotus Notes, a software used for collaborative, or group applications, that offered group calendaring, instant messaging and web browsing. Another Lotus software product was Lotus Jazz, an office productivity suite designed for the Apple Macintosh.

The founder of Lotus Software, Mitch Kapor, was a teacher of a form of meditation called Transcendental Meditation, and named his company after a meditative position called The Lotus Position.
