DDR RAM and RAMBUS are among the latest go-to devices for computer manufacturers. RAMBUS memory is a relatively recent type of memory that is not based on the traditional SDRAM model. While RAMBUS eclipsed the data speeds reached by DDR, it has not been universally embraced.

  1. Compatibility

    • DDR RAM has a major benefit in that it is able to work with older SDRAM. Mixing the two memory types does not penalize the user. RAMBUS is unable to work with either DDR RAM or SDRAM---a huge drawback.

    Memory Socket Requirements

    • If every RAMBUS memory socket in a motherboard is not populated, collectively they will not work. In a DDR-based motherboard, not every memory socket is required to have a memory stick installed.

    Speed

    • The RAMBUS runs memory cycles at an exponentially faster rate than DDR RAM. DDR RAM is typically 266MHz, while RAMBUS can reach speeds of 800MHz or higher.
