Size and Shape
-
Hook and loop sandpaper comes in a variety of sizes and shapes for use with different orbiting sanders. Disc-shaped is the most common, but other shapes include triangular and star. It is also sold by the yard to customize pieces for finishing sanders that require partial sheets.
Grit
-
Like all sandpapers, hook and loop comes in grits ranging from 40 to 2000. The lower number a grit rating is, the coarser the sandpaper. The most common material used for grit is aluminium oxide, which can be used on metal or wood.
-
Weight
-
The weight refers to the backing material that the grit is adhered to. For hook and loop sandpaper the most common weights are "D" weight for medium applications, "A" weight for finish sanding and cloth-backed for heavy-duty sanding.
