Expensive clubs are expensive for a reason. The same goes for cheap clubs. Although some cheap clubs may look identical to some expensive clubs, the technology and quality is different. Cheap clubs are good choices for recreational golfers, but not for competitive golfers.

Most name-brand irons are made from cast or stainless steel. Many "clone" golf clubs are made from a similar material, but not the same high quality metal as the name-brand clubs.
Quality

The manufacturing process is more extensive with name-brand clubs. You are guaranteed to have the exact measurements in regards to the loft, lie angle and length. "Clone" clubs often don't go through extensive measurements. Not all cheap sets are bad quality, though.

Expensive clubs don't have to be as expensive as they are. Since they are name-brand clubs, manufacturers spend a lot of money on advertising. That money has to be gathered somewhere. Cheap clubs don't get advertised as much, so they don't have extra expenses.

Name-brand clubs such as Ping, Callaway, TaylorMade, etc. sell iron sets anywhere from $400 to $1,300 and drivers from $200 to $500 as of 2010. Cheaper brands such as Wilson and Top Flite, sell sets that include a driver, fairway woods, irons, putter and bag between $200-$500. You can get a lot more clubs for a much lower cost without a great sacrifice in quality.

Technology advancement benefits recreational golfers more than professional golfers. Many cheap sets include larger club heads with perimeter weighting to increase the forgiveness of the clubs. Hybrids were recently developed with the average golfer in mind because they are easier to hit than long irons.
