Chihuahua Eye Problems by Eye Color

Chihuahua Eye Problems by Eye Color thumbnail
The large protruding eyes of the chihuahua makes it prone to eye infections.

The chihuahua is the only toy breed that has not been bred to be small, but instead is naturally small in stature. Although they tend to be hardy, lively little dogs, their large protruding eyes have made them prone to eye infections and degenerative diseases.

  1. Eye Color

    Merle Chihuahuas

    • Merle chihuahuas are a color variation of the breed with a marble pattern to the coat. This variation is not recognized by the American Kennel Club due to the health problems that seem to be prevalent in these animals. Merle chihuahuas may also have marbled blue-brown eyes. These dogs have a high rate of hereditary blindness.

    Common Problems

    • Chihuahuas tend to develop cataracts as they age. A cataract occurs when the protein molecules of the lens become linked together. Owners will notice a change in eye color as the lens becomes cloudy. The most common causes of cataracts in chihuahuas are nutritional deficiencies and elevated blood sugar.
