Most people have a preferred internet browser. Mozilla Firefox is undoubtedly one of the leading internet browsers in terms of popularity. Mozilla's open-source platform has allowed users to adapt their browsers to personal preferences and develop add-ons and new browsers to share.

  1. Pre-Firefox

    • In 1998, Mozilla started its venture into open-source browsers with the launch of Netscape. The Mozilla project gave users the opportunity to develop tools, add-ons and new browsers.

    Firefox Release

    • Firefox 1.0 was released late in 2004. The initial browser was available as a free download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, and it was offered in a dozen languages. Firefox was highlighted for its features, such as pop-up blocking, online fraud protection, enhanced search capabilities and "more than 100 extensions" available at the time of its release.

    Firefox Milestones

    • In October 2005, less than one year after its release, Firefox had been downloaded more than 100 million times. Firefox received a boost in December 2007 when AOL announced that there would be no future releases of Netscape Navigator and advised users to switch to Firefox. On July 31, 2009, Firefox reached its one billionth download.
