Salary of the Watchtower Society President
First formed in 1881 and later incorporated in 1884, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (WTBS) serves as the legal instrument used by Jehovah's Witnesses for publishing and printing Bibles and Bible-based literature worldwide. Since the WTBS is a legal corporation, it must have a president.

History
-
Charles Taze Russell was the WTBS' first president and served as such for over 30 years, notes the book "Jehovah's Witnesses: Proclaimers of God's Kingdom." After his death, "The Watch Tower" magazine reported that he invested his private fortune into his ministerial work, receiving $11 per month for personal expenses while president of the WTBS.

In Russell's will, he noted what should be done regarding salaries and the future of the WTBS, stating that "none be paid; that merely reasonable expenses be allowed to those who serve the Society or its work in any manner."

Present
-
As of 2010, the president of the WTBS serves at the world headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses in Brooklyn, N.Y. All who serve there, including the president and members of the Governing Body, "subscribe to a vow of poverty," cites "Jehovah's Witnesses." While not signifying an ascetic lifestyle, members share provisions of food, shelter and modest allowances for basic needs.
