Significance
-
Kids can use the Internet almost anywhere they go. School libraries, public malls and fast-food restaurants offer free wireless Internet access. An Arizona school district provides a Wi-Fi connection on the bus as students ride to and from school.
Expert Insight
-
Some experts believe wireless Internet technology exposes children to harmful radiation. Former Harvard School of Public Health research consultant Susan Clarke says Wi-Fi causes the appearance of harmful neurological and cardiac symptoms in young children. On the other hand, Michael First, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, says he is not aware of any evidence of harm caused by radio frequency radiation.

Prevention
-
Parents who are concerned about wireless Internet safety for their children may choose to install monitoring software on laptops and cell phones. The software allows parents to identify when their children access inappropriate websites or engage in risky online behavior.
