Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1981

The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981 is an extensive piece of United States legislation. The act covers appropriations for several different areas, with two of the largest being agriculture and health services.

  1. Agriculture Considerations

    • The act takes several measures to reduce direct agricultural expenditures by the federal government. This includes reducing the amount given to subsidize the milk industry, setting new limits on federal insurance for farmers and limiting funds from Commodity Credit Corporation for certain administrative aspects of the corporations which receive said funds.

    Health Service Considerations

    • While agriculture projects are given less considerations, the National Health Service Corps is provided with several new or extended appropriations. These includes funds for family medicine and dentistry, medical education for individuals from poorer backgrounds and authorization for the Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide financial support for struggling medical schools.

    History

    • The act was originally introduced in the House by Representative James R. Jones of Ohio on June 19, 1981. It was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on August 13, 1981.
