Healing Period for a Nose Ring

Healing Period for a Nose Ring thumbnail
Nose rings are a very popular form of body piercing.

Nose rings are very popular and add a personalized accent to a person's face. Proper care after getting a new nose ring is essential. Failure to properly care for a new nose ring after placement is dangerous and can lead to infection and scarring. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Average Healing Time

    • Depending on how much cartilage was pierced the average nose ring takes 3 to 12 months to heal. The healing time may take longer depending on its location, if an infection is present, or if the jewelry is removed before the area is allowed to heal.

    Care and Cleaning

    • The ring should be cleaned daily with antibiotic soap. Avoid using alcohol or other cleansers around the area. Clean the area thoroughly, removing any debris that may be present, and allow the piercing to air dry. Do not dry the piercing with a towel as this may reintroduce bacteria into the piercing.

    What To Avoid

    • Do not touch or allow others to touch the ring while it is healing. Consider covering the area with hypoallergenic tape to avoid touching and pulling on the piercing while sleeping. Smoking during the healing process is discouraged because it suppresses the immune system and reduces the amount of blood flow to the area, adding months of healing time.
