What Is the Difference Between JRE & Java SE?

Java, the programming language created by Sun Microsystems in 1995, is essential in today's Internet environment, running numerous applications and interactive programs online. But just because it has Java in the name, doesn't mean it's the same thing. Java SE, or Standard Edition, and JRE, or Java Runtime Environment, work together but are different.

  1. What They Are

    • Java SE is the free software you download to write applications for the Internet, mobile phones or a desktop operating system. JRE is within Java SE and is the "runtime program" for Java on your computer.

    How They Interact

    • Java SE contains JRE, Java Virtual Machine, libraries and platform core classes. JRE allows you to run programs online that are created using Java SE programming language.

    Differences

    • Java SE is used to create the programs that run inside webpages, and JRE is used to run those programs.
