The Difference Between Inkjet & Deskjet

The Difference Between Inkjet & Deskjet thumbnail
A Deskjet is a laser printer brand.

The term "inkjet" refers to a type of printer technology, while "Deskjet" is a brand-name inkjet printer manufactured by HP. Inkjet printers are the most common type of printers, and they work by spraying tiny droplets of ink onto the paper.

  1. History

    • Manufacturers developed the first inkjet printers that could print computer images in the late 1970s. They began to sell them on the market in the 1980s. HP introduced the Deskjet in 1988 at a cost of $995. It could print only about two pages per minute. A 2010 model Deskjet printer costs as little as $30 and prints as many as 30 pages per minute.

    Types

    • Other companies besides HP manufacture inkjet printers, such as Epson, Lexmark and Canon. HP also sells other types of inkjet printers, such as the Officejet, Photosmart and Designjet.

    Technology

    • Inkjet printers utilize thermo technology. The ink is heated, causing a bubble to form, which then bursts, forcing out a tiny droplet of ink. The printer takes about half a second to complete one horizontal swipe across a page. Thousands of ink droplets will be found on a finished page.

    The Deskjet

    • The HP Deskjet is among the top-selling brands of printers. This consumer grade printer is advertised as HP's most cost-effective line. The Photosmart is aimed at people who want to occasionally print pictures as well as documents at home, and the Officejet is the best option for small businesses, as it prints quickly and can handle a higher volume than the Deskjet.
