What Is a Lidocaine Infusion for RSD? thumbnail
Lidocaine is sometimes administered intravenously.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy--RSD--sometimes referred to as complex regional pain syndrome, is a rare condition that causes moderate to severe pain. Lidocaine infusion is sometimes used as a treatment when other pain control measures have failed.

  1. Identification

    • According to MayoClinic.com, RSD is a rare chronic pain condition that usually affects one arm or leg, but it can be present in other parts of the body as well. The pain is sometimes accompanied by swelling or the discoloration of the skin of the affected appendage. Sometimes a severe burning sensation is experienced as well.

    Treatment

    • According to the National Institutes of Health, a variety of drugs are used to treat RSD. Although none has been isolated as the preferred medication, it rather varies from patient to patient. Lidocaine is a drug used for neuropathic pain, such as the kind seen in RSD. The drug is given intravenously at a slow rate, and the Newton-Wellesley Hospital states that pain relief from this treatment can last for a few hours up to several weeks. Results vary greatly depending on numerous factors.

    Advancements

    • According to the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, ongoing research is focusing on more aggressive treatments at the onset of the condition, rather than simply pain control measures as it progresses.
