Collapsible Bike Safety
Collapsible or folding bikes are convenient ways to get around, allowing you the quickness of a bike with easy storing and portability. All safety tips for other types of bikes also apply to collapsible bikes, but collapsible bikes have their own weaknesses.
-
Features
-
When you unfold your collapsible bike, triple-check the bolts, locks or other mechanisms that lock the frame in place. Just as an improperly attached wheel is a safety hazard, so is a frame that comes loose or collapses on you mid-ride. Test these attachments before you buy the bike by sitting on the saddle, squeezing the brake levers and twisting the handlebars back and forth. If the frame twists at all, it's not a safe bike.
Weight
-
Your weight plus the weight of any luggage on your collapsible bike should not exceed the bike's weight rating, stated in the manual. Weigh your luggage if necessary before loading it on the bike.
-
Considerations
-
Maintain your collapsible bike with regular tuneups. Check the tire pressure, brake responsiveness, gear shifters and pedals before each ride. Clean any folding or sliding parts after riding in the rain to keep them in optimal condition.
