Solar Power Used in Homes
Homes that use a solar power system can save up to 80 percent on their energy bills, according to Bob Vila. Some in-home solar power systems heat water, while others convert sunlight into electricity. Does this Spark an idea?

Types
-
According to Solar, Wind & Rain, the two primary types of solar energy used in homes are solar thermal and solar photovoltaic, or PV, systems. A solar thermal system uses the sun's rays to heat water kept in a storage tank, while a solar PV system uses photosensitive panels that generate electric current when sunlight shines on them.
Benefits
-
Both solar thermal and solar PV technologies can save homeowners money on their electric bills by making homes more self-sufficient in terms of heating and power consumption. Additionally, since the occupants of the home rely less on heating oil, natural gas or electricity derived from fossil fuels, they reduce the negative impact these substances have on the environment.

Considerations
-
While solar power can shave dollars off monthly bills, Bob Vila notes that the initial installation of these systems can cost thousands of dollars. Eventually, however, the systems pay for themselves while greatly increasing the value of the home in the event of a future sale.
