Help on How to Buy a New Computer

Buying a computer isn't something you do everyday and whatever kind you decide to buy, you will be using it for a while. Here are a few things to bear in mind when buying a new computer.

  1. Memory is Important

    • Cnet.com's Technology Editor Brian Cooley says that having enough RAM (Random Access Memory) is a priority. You should be aiming for at least 2GB to run the newest operating systems. Ideally, if you can afford it, you should aim for 3GB or 4GB.

    What's It For?

    • You need to decide what you will be using the computer for. PCWorld.com says if you want to just browse the net and process a few word documents, then a basic model is adequate. If it is gaming or video editing that you want to do, then you are going to need to set your price range higher.

    Bundles aren't bargains

    • A package deal may sound like you're getting a lot for your money but it may not be the bargain you think. The store may bundle the printer, monitor and mouse in, but if you have working ones at home, what is the point in duplicates? It may be better to spend your money on a better computer than one in a bundle with fancy extras you may don't need.

    Get a Bargain

    • Technology improves rapidly, but it doesn't mean that yesterday's technology is obselete. Retailers will want to move old stock to make room for newer models and will cut prices on the remaning older units.
