The History of Pyrex Glassware

Corning Glass Works Company first introduced Pyrex glassware in 1915, according to World Kitchen. Corning revised its product Nonex by removing lead from its formula to make the new product, patented it and introduced it to the market as heat-resistant ovenware. Does this Spark an idea?

Heat Resistance
- Corning added boric acid to glass to make it more resistant to heat. According to MadeHow.com, Corning wanted to produce a product to use in kerosene lanterns and railroad signaling equipment that would not shatter when exposed to heat.
Nonex
- Corning named one of its new borosilicate glasses Nonex. Corning employee Jesse Littleton gave a Nonex dish to his wife, who had asked him for something durable to use for cooking. She successfully baked a cake in it, according to Arc International Cookware.
Additional Uses
- After changing the Nonex formula, Corning used Pyrex to make ovenware and gave it to the Philadelphia Cooking School for testing. Corning introduced Pyrex ovenware shortly afterward. Pyrex glass later proved to be suitable in laboratory glassware, eyeglasses, telescopes and electronic equipment, according to MadeHow.com.
