The Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted in 1990. All commercial lodging facilities designed or constructed after January 26, 1993, must adhere to the ADA rules throughout the building and outdoors as well as provide handicapped accessible rooms. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shape

    • The door handle must have a shape that is easy to grasp only using one hand. Lever operated, push type and U- shaped handles are all acceptable.

    Actions

    • The door handle must be able to be operated without any tight grasping, tight pinching or wrist twisting.

    Sliding Doors

    • The handles and all operating hardware must be visible from both sides when the doors are open.

    Measurements

    • The handles must be installed no higher than 48 inches above the floor to keep them within easy reach of a person in a wheelchair.
