Soapstone Vs. Laminate Countertops

Soapstone Vs. Laminate Countertops thumbnail
Do not chop food directly on laminate countertops, which may damage the surface.

For many years, laminate countertops were the standard in most homes in America. But stone, like granite, marble and soapstone have increased in popularity for homeowners looking for an elegant finish. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Food Preparation

    • Soapstone is unique because it is naturally resistant to bacteria, making it an ideal surface for preparing food. Laminate countertops do not have the same properties. Cutting boards, food mats and other preparation tools should be used.

    Cleaning

    • Both soapstone and laminate are easy to clean. Wipe countertops down daily with soapy water to clean them. Laminate is prone to staining, but most stains can be removed with soapy water. Do not use abrasive materials on laminate; these products may damage the surface.

    Cost

    • Laminate is one of the most inexpensive countertop materials on the market. Replacement and repair costs for laminate can be very expensive. Soapstone costs more, but is generally more durable than laminate.

    Repairs

    • Heat can severely damage laminate countertops. Laminate is also prone to chips and cracks, especially when food is directly cut on the surface. Minor damage can be repaired using a laminate repair kit. Severe damage requires complete replacement. Scratches, dents and chips in soapstone countertops generally can be buffed away using fine sandpaper.
