Proper Clothing for Exercise
There are many types and items of clothing recommended for use while exercising, but ultimately your decision should be based on your preferences. The clothing should be comfortable and supportive, though.
-
Footwear
-
Shoes are an important part of your exercise wardrobe. They should fit well and support the arch of the foot. Socks should likewise fit well, and cotton socks tend to work best because of their absorbency and snug fit. Socks made of other materials may become slippery and uncomfortable if they do not absorb sweat.
Bras
-
Wearing the right bra is imperative for women while exercising. Sports bras, in particular, work best for exercising. Cotton or cotton blends are the best material for bras worn while exercising because of their comfort level and ability to absorb sweat.
-
Shirts
-
Some men choose to exercise shirtless and some women opt to wear only a sports bra. If you choose to wear a shirt, there are many options. Cotton shirts are a popular choice, although there are blends that are equally comfortable and may help in moving sweat away from the skin.
Bottoms
-
The decision of whether to wear shorts or pants while exercising should be made based on physical comfort. Shorts are a good option for some, but others may find that their legs become chafed from rubbing together. As with shirts, the material that shorts or pants are made of is important. The clothing should be absorbent and comfortable.
Considerations
-
Many people find that if they look good in their exercise clothing, they feel better about exercising. While comfort is most important, choose styles that are flattering to boost your confidence. Whatever you choose, stay away from oversized or very loose-fitting clothing as they can interfere when doing certain exercises or using gym equipment, posing an injury risk.
Insight
-
Exercising leads to sweating, which can lead to discomfort. Minimize the discomfort by layering clothing so that items may be removed when you're hot or sweaty and replaced when you're cooling down.
