What Do I Need to Start a Private Investigation Business? thumbnail
A private investigator needs to take good notes.

Some private investigators start a business by cashing in on their military background or their law enforcement experience. With good equipment, a little capital and an aggressive personality, a private investigator who doesn't mind long hours and confrontational situations can start a business.

  1. Training

    • You don't need a formal education to start a private investigation business, but it helps to have a postsecondary degree in criminal justice or police science. A detective school can teach private investigators how to use a gun, fingerprint, gather evidence and write reports.

    Qualifications

    • Most states require private investigators to be licensed. Your local police department or state agency can tell you if your state requires it. You must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check.

    Skills

    • Private investigators should know their way around the legal system, be able to perform undercover work, and understand client confidentiality. They must have good interrogation skills, be able to handle conflict, and be mature, persistent, logical and assertive.

    Equipment

    • A private investigation business needs a good telephone and computer system, a website, surveillance equipment---such as video and digital cameras with telephoto lenses, cell phones, tape recorders, GPS systems, and binoculars---and a reliable undercover vehicle.
