Standard Defintion

Built for standard definition televisions, the standard receiver makes basic DirecTV service available. You will be able to search for shows in the program guide up to 3 1/2 days in advance. All channels use digital sound and picture formats, which makes this receiver a good choice for analog television owners.
High Defintion

The DirecTV HD receiver offers 1080p or 1080i clarity and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound on most channels. Models H21 and H23 offer additional media options with QuickTune, TV Apps and 3-D channel viewing. Advanced Programming Guide (APG) allows you to search for shows seven days in advance. HDMI, Component, S-Video, Composite and Optical Audio outputs allow multiple connection options. There is a charge for using DirecTV's high definition service.

Media share options include watching DirecTV programming on your computer and streaming your personal photos and music to your television. The high definition and DVR services will cost extra.
