Life Cycle of a Computer

Life Cycle of a Computer thumbnail
A computer's useful life cycle will begin again if it is recycled.

The life cycle of a computer begins when the materials needed to manufacture it are extracted from the environment. Having an old computer refurbished will extend its life cycle, and recycling it is kinder to the environment.

  1. Materials

    • The computer's life cycle begins when the components needed to manufacture it are extracted from the environment. Materials used to make a computer include lead, aluminium, silver and plastic, which comes from oil.

    Manufacturing

    • The necessary components are brought together to make the computer. Sometimes computer parts are separately manufactured and then taken to one location to make up the finished product.

    Active Life

    • During its active life, the computer is a tool for storing and transmitting information. If the computer becomes too old or slow, its life can be extended by passing it on to a community group or business. Having it refurbished will also keep it running smoothly for a few more years and help the environment.

    End of Life

    • When the computer reaches the end of its life, it can be disposed of in a landfill site or recycled. If the computer is recycled, its parts can be used to make new computers and its life cycle will begin over again.
