Carmelite monks dedicate themselves to a life of contemplation

The Carmelite Order emerged from the early monks who settled on the slopes of Mount Carmel. The early monks took inspiration from the solitary prophet Elijah and the contemplative mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary. In the year 1206 they codified their way of life.

  1. Mission

    • Carmelites strive to live in the presence of God. They are contemplative but also believe in a practical ministry. They live in groups for moral and spiritual support, but they may adopt any career that fulfills a need.

    The Carmelite Rule

    • The Carmelites adhere to a codification of their early founder's way of life called The Rule of Saint Albert. The rule consists of 24 subheads called chapters and deals with issues such as housing, diet, prayer, chastity, property and work.

    Lay Carmelites

    • Lay persons who wish to pursue God in the spirit and tradition of the Carmelites may connect themselves to the order by means of a pledge. They will focus on prayer and the word of God. Lay Carmelites live out the rule in their daily life and do not need to enter a monastery.
