How to Buy Good Sheets

When selecting bed sheets, two of the most important things to look for are the material and the thread count of the sheets. Good bed sheets can be bought at many home furnishing stores or online. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Thread Count

    • The higher the thread count, meaning threads per square inch, the softer the sheet. Generally, high quality bed sheets will have a thread count of no less than 200. Though U.S. manufacturers don't make sheets with thread counts exceeding 310, Europeans craftspeople make luxury sheets with much finer threads and higher thread counts.

    Materials

    • A majority of sheets made in the United States are made with cotton. Percale and sateen are tightly woven cotton sheets common for home use, flannel cotton sheets are good for extra warmth and cotton-polyester blends are wrinkle resistant, though often not as soft as pure cotton weaves. Authentic silk satin sheets are also soft and particularly warm, but tend to be expensive and require dry cleaning.

    Where To Shop

    • Chains devoted to home decoration and furnishing, such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, have bed sheets from major home textile brands available for sale at store locations and online. Such sites as Overstock.com also have quality bed sheet sets in an assortment of colors, sizes, brands, material and thread counts. Some major home textile brands, such as Thomas Lee, have luxury sheets available for sale on their official website.
