About Student Athlete Health Insurance

About Student Athlete Health Insurance thumbnail
Student health insurance coverage can vary, sometimes excluding athletic injuries.

While student athletes need health insurance, all policies do not include the same level of coverage. School sponsored and private plans can often exclude athletic injuries. Insuring possible athletic injuries can require athletes to obtain separate insurance policies or riders to existing coverage.

  1. Requirements

    • State and private elementary and high schools can require insurance coverage for all students participating in sports activities. Universities and collegiate sports associations (such as the NCAA) typically require student athletes to carry health insurance, often recommending policies with terms specifying coverage of athletic injuries.

    Private Policies

    • Private health insurance, such as a policy a parent carries for a child, does not always cover athletic injuries. Select policies exclude such injuries completely, while others require the purchase of a rider for sports-related injuries. Policies can also specify coverage amounts according to the location of medical services, such as reduced coverage for out-of-state treatments.

    School Health Insurance

    • While some primary schools and universities offer health insurance plans for students, school insurance plans can exclude coverage for athletic injuries. In the event a student also carries a private health insurance policy, the school policy might not accept responsibility for athletic injuries.
