New Hampshire requires that you register with the state and obtain a business license if you would like to do business within its borders. How to do this depends on what type of business you operate.

  1. Classifying Your Business

    • Nonprofits, corporations and limited liability organizations all have different requirements. You can better determine how to classify your business by visiting the New Hampshire Department of State, Corporate Division. Once you have determined what type of business you will operate, you can download the appropriate forms for registration.

    Registering Corporations

    • Corporations must register as "domestic" or "foreign" entities. Domestic organizations are from in state and foreign organizations are from out of state. Some of the forms you must submit include an application for the reservation of your company's name, articles of incorporation and merger forms if you are merging businesses. There are fees with each form. The forms you need will depend on why you need a license, which could be because you are starting, relocating or restructuring your business.

    Registering Limited Liability Organizations

    • Limited liability companies and partnerships must also register as domestic or foreign entities. Again, domestic organizations are from in state and foreign organizations are from out of state. Once you've determined whether you are domestic or foreign, you must apply for a reservation of your organization's name and submit a certificate of formation. If you are restructuring or merging your organization, there are various other forms. Every form has an associated fee; the forms you need will depend on why you need to apply for a license.

    Registering Nonprofits

    • Nonprofit organizations must register as domestic or foreign entities as well. Once you have determined whether your organization is foreign or domestic, you can submit a New Hampshire Nonprofit Application along with a $25 application fee, as of August 2010. Amendment and dissolution forms are also available if necessary for $25 each.
