New security threats are emerging every day. Antivirus and antispyware programs have databases of known threats. A new and still unidentified threat may compromise a user's computer. However, some antivirus and antispyware programs can identify as yet unknown malware based on behavioral patterns.

For example, a program containing a virus or spyware may purport to be an antivirus program to persuade the user to install it. Many problems arise because users are caught off guard. Always establish if a program is safe before downloading it.

They should also download security updates as soon as they become available.
