How to Compare Electric Energy Companies
Electric energy companies generate electricity and distribute it to consumers as a product. These companies differ in a variety of ways, including corporate structures, various methods of energy generation, other service programs and company size.
-
Structure
-
Consumers can compare electric companies on the basis of the basis of structure. Electric energy companies come in all types and size and include private and public companies. Because electricity is a vital resource, many energy companies are wholly or partially owned by a local government. Information about a company's structure is almost always publicly available and can generally be requested from the company itself.
Types of Generation
-
Electricity can be produced in a number of different ways. Traditionally, electricity has been commercially produced through the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas or through hydro generation which incorporates electricity-generating turbines along river or water sources. While some companies still generate power through these sources, others rely on alternative means of energy generation, such as that derived from wind, solar and biomass. Companies, if asked, will provide information about how their power is generated.

Size
-
An electric energy generating company can also be compared based upon it's relative size. Size can be measured a number of ways, including by how much electricity a company produces, how many customers it serves and how much money it charges for services. Again, this information is usually available upon request, as well as in regulatory filings.
