Boiler Mechanic Training

Boiler Mechanic Training thumbnail
A boiler mechanic must be physically fit.

A boiler mechanic training class provides an active instructional environment that fosters the development of skills and acumen needed to operate or repair stationary engines, boilers and other energy-generating mechanical equipment.

  1. Degree Requirements

    • U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data show that a boiler mechanic usually has at least a high school diploma--or GED certificate--and a two-year apprenticeship certificate from an institution that the International Union of Operating Engineers has certified.

    Training Features

    • A 2010 BLS survey revealed that a novice boiler mechanic typically receives on-the-job training. Most employees require one or two years of training and working under the direction of skillful professionals, reports O*Net OnLine. Boiler mechanics learn how to observe and interpret reading on gauges, monitor and inspect equipment and computer terminals, and perform routine maintenance checks on boiler machinery.

    Tools

    • According to O*Net OnLine, boiler mechanic training sessions teach attendees how to use the tools of the trade. These include gas brazing equipment, oxyacetylene welding machinery, pneumatic sanding machines, Phillips head screwdrivers, and computerized maintenance management system software.
