In product development and manufacturing, products or parts of products must be tested to ensure they meet various standards. The International Organization for Standards (ISO) establishes the standards and the ISO Guide 43-1 is a support guide to the standards.

    • The International Organization for Standards (ISO) is the international organization responsible for establishing over 18,000 international standards across a variety of subjects. These standards help facilitate international business and product development by ensuring products and parts of products interface and work together.

    • To comply with ISO standards, companies must have their products tested to validate compliance with standards and specifications. In addition, the facilities and laboratories where the testing is done must also comply with various

      guidelines. The ISO Guide 43-1 specify guidelines the testing facilities and laboratories must meet to secure ISO accreditation.

    Maintenance

    • To maintain accreditation, testing facilities and laboratories conduct "proficiency testing" regularly and provide the test result to ISO accreditation institutions. This proficiency testing is required to demonstrate continuous compliance with ISO Guide 43-1.
