Fish Tank Mold Allergies

Fish Tank Mold Allergies thumbnail
Mold often grows on the top of the tank or bowl.

People can be allergic to the mold that grows on fish tanks or goldfish bowls. The fish are not in danger of getting this allergy. This allergy is treatable and preventable.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of fish tank mold allergies include watery eyes, constantly runny or stuffed-up nose, sneezing more often than usual, and post-nasal drip. People with asthma may have an attack if exposed to any type of mold.

    Prevention

    • Keeping the tank free of mold may reduce symptoms. Wipe the green, white or black moldy areas off the top of the tank, equipment and under the tank lid with a clean cloth.

    Treatment

    • People with allergies to fish tank mold tend to be allergic to many types of mold spores. Keeping the home as well as the fish tank mold-free is needed to eliminate symptoms. People with chronic allergies also need to see a doctor.

    Consideration

    • Although fish are not allergic to mold, the mold can still kill the fish. The mold robs the water content of oxygen. It also secretes ammonia into the water, which can poison the fish.
