Online Training for Fire Investigation

Fire Investigators search for clues in the aftermath of a fire.

Certified Fire Investigators (CFIs) use a number of techniques to determine the cause of a fire. CFIs can determine whether arson was involved or if violations of code played into the fire. Several online training programs exist for certified fire investigation.

  1. Function

    • A Certified Fire Investigator is a professionally trained fire expert who has completed the certification process established by the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI). The IAAI established a certification program in 1986 to evaluate a fire professional's skills at investigating fire scenes and evaluating evidence.

    How to Become a CFI

    • Completion of a fire investigation training program is the first step in becoming a CFI. Programs can be completed online or in person. After completion of the course, you must take the proctored CFI exam. The exam is closed-book and covers every duty area a CFI may be asked to perform. A score of 70% or above is required to pass. As of 2011, the cost for the test was $200 for non-IAAI members and $150 for IAAI members. CFIs must be re-certified every five years.

    Onliine CFI Programs

    • A number of online programs exist for CFI training. CFITrainer.net runs a comprehensive program that includes training modules. TrainingDivision.com, a comprehensive firefighter training school, also offers CFI training. Online colleges that offer Criminal Justice degrees may also offer a Fire Investigation track, including University of Phoenix and Kaplan.
