Child Abuse & Neglect Certification Training in NYS
The International Child Abuse Network defines child abuse as "Anything that causes injury to a child or puts the child in danger of physical injury." Neglect is a form of child abuse that occurs when a caregiver fails to meet a child's basic needs. New York state requires certain professionals to complete training in order to recognize suspected cases of maltreatment.

Scope of Training

The required child abuse and neglect training workshop is designed to provide mandated professionals with an understanding of the different types of abuse and possible indicators of each, including physical and behavioral. Potential intervention strategies, common characteristics of abusive caretakers and environments, and reporting procedures are also covered.
Mandated Reporters

According to the Mandated Reporter Resource Center, the law requires professionals who come into contact with children to report suspected maltreatment when there is reasonable cause to do so. The list of professionals in vast and varied; it includes health professionals, such as physicians, nurses, social workers and therapists, and well as teachers, child care providers and other personnel involved in the supervision and education of children. Law enforcement professionals, including police officers and district attorneys, must also receive training.

Training Facilities

Mandated reporters may complete their child abuse and neglect training certification workshop throughout New York state at locations approved by the Office of Children and Family Services. According to the Mandated Reporter Resource Center, alternatives to in-person training include an online format and an instructor-led course via the Internet.
