How to Buy a Proper Snow Blower

According to Consumer Reports, there are three types of snow blowers that are designed for different types of snow conditions. When purchasing a snow blower, consumers should consider the terrain, the amount of snowfall that occurs and the size of the space that needs to be cleared of snow. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Models

    • Snow blowers come in three different models: single-stage electric, gas and two-stage gas. Single-stage electric is lightweight, portable, requires less maintenance and is generally used on flat surfaces with 6 inches of snow or less. Single-stage gas has the same features as the electric snow blower except it is slightly heavier and can remove up to 12 inches of snow. Both models do not run well on hills or gravel surfaces.

    Two-Stage Gas

    • Two-stage gas snow blowers are designed for clearing large areas. They are powerful, and they have an easy start-up system. They are heavy and bulkier and need constant engine maintenance. Consumer Report recommends that consumers test out the models (if they are able to) before they buy them and not to buy more power than is needed to perform the task. They also encourage consumers not to focus on drive speeds.

    Features

    • There are certain features that are considered an important part of a snow blower and they include the one-handed drive, easy chute adjustment, headlights, an easy starting system and a dead-man system, which stops the spinning auger and impeller when the handle is released. Consumer Reports also recommends to consumers that they make sure their snow blower comes with a clean-out device.
