What Wood is Best to Use for Making Speaker Boxes?
Medium density fiberboard (MDF) is the best wood you can use for a speaker box. Most speaker boxes available on the market today are made of this rigid, nonresonate material.

Use 3/4-inch thick MDF for your speaker box. This will give you the rigidity you will need to prevent flexing as well as providing a light overall weight to the speaker box. MDF comes in 4-by-8 foot sheets and can be purchased at lumber yards and home improvement stores.
Features
-
MDF is easy to work with, and because it is made of compressed wood fibers, it will not contract and expand like solid woods such as maple. Its density-to-weight ratio is low as well and is perfectly suited for car audio, guitar amps and home audio equipment.

Warning
-
Do not confuse MDF with particle board. This low-density wood is not suitable for speaker boxes as wood screws can be pulled out easily, and your cabinet will be much more susceptible to water damage. MDF is stiffer and will last longer in this type of application.
