AutoCAD is a powerful drafting program that allows drawings to be created in both 2-D and 3-D formats. AutoCAD Lite, or more formally AutoCAD LT, is a 2-D version of this software.

AutoCAD LT is a 2-D-only version of Autodesk's best-selling AutoCAD software. It is intended as a tool to create technical drawings. AutoCAD LT uses the DWG file format common in all AutoCAD-based products.

Although AutoCAD LT can read 3-D drawings from AutoCAD, it cannot create true 3-D drawings. The program does not support AutoLISP routines, which may restrict customization of the program and other enhancements such as parametric drawing are also omitted.

Advantages of AutoCAD LT

AutoCAD LT is smaller and cheaper than the "full" AutoCAD, and requires a lower PC specification. This also means there is less to learn to fully use the software. If you do not need to draft in three dimensions, AutoCAD LT gives you all the tools you need to create technical drawings in 2-D.
