How to Help the Cambodian Children

How to Help the Cambodian Children thumbnail
Cambodia is an extremely poor country.

Child labor is the norm in Cambodia. Many children work or beg rather than attend school. It is not uncommon to see children as young as five gathered outside tourist attractions such as temples or museums, trying to sell postcards or cheap toys to passersby. Their plight moves many to look into ways to help the children of Cambodia.

  1. History

    • Cambodia has had a turbulent history since the 1970s, when Pol Pot's regime resulted in the brutal torture and murder of millions of people. The country is slowly starting to rebuild itself, but is still suffering from extreme poverty.

    Misconceptions

    • While it is heartbreaking to see young children wandering the streets and asking strangers for money, some people argue that giving them money is not the answer, since the money usually goes to the adult who has sent the child out to beg.

    Organizations

    • There are numerous Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in Cambodia dedicated to helping get children off the streets, among them Friends International and Help the Cambodian Children. Many of them offer vocational training to young people, enabling them to work and become self-sufficient. Donating to these organizations can help to ensure they continue their work.
