Squash Racket Comparison

Squash Racket Comparison thumbnail
Squash rackets are available in a variety of weights, materials and prices.

The racket is the most important piece of equipment for a squash player. When purchasing a racket, a player should consider weight (heavier for players with more arm strength, lighter for players with less arm strength), material (harder for more power and accuracy, lighter for more durability) and cost (more expensive for experienced players, less expensive for novices).

  1. Weight

    • The regulation weight for squash rackets is 255 grams (9 oz.). However, many rackets are lighter (4 to 7 oz.) to accommodate different player strengths. Lighter rackets are usually most appropriate for female or junior players.

    Material

    • Squash rackets were traditionally made of laminated wood, but modern rackets are usually constructed from composite materials such as titanium and graphite. Titanium frames offer a high level of power and control but can break easily. Softer materials are more durable but provide less power during play.

    Cost

    • Regulation squash rackets range in price from $40 (basic rackets for beginners) to $175 and up (high-quality rackets for professional players). Before making a purchase, players should carefully weigh their level of skill and experience to determine the right balance of quality and cost.
