What Is Decompression?

Decompression is a release of compression, a force of pressure which attempts to reduce the size of an object. The word is used literally and figuratively.

  1. Physical Decompression

    • A literal example of decompression would be the return of a spring to its natural state after being contracted. The force that pushes down on a spring compresses it, and when that force is removed the spring experiences decompression.

    Decompression of Data

    • The word decompression is also used in information sciences to describe the conversion of data to its original, unreduced size from the compressed form used during transfer and storage. Some programs, like Winzip, are devoted to the compression and decompression of files.

    Slang

    • Similar to "blowing off steam," decompression can also mean stress reduction and/or relaxation. Many people describe decompression as a feeling they get on vacation; a release of perceived pressures.
