The History of Armenian Dance

The History of Armenian Dance thumbnail
Dancing has a rich history in Armenia.

The roots of dance in Armenia date back to 650 B.C., when Armenia was known as Hayastan. Over time, several cultures moving throughout the region influenced the cultural practices, including dances, of the people living there.

  1. Eastern Caucasus

    • Many of the dances performed in Armenia today trace their roots back from the Eastern Caucasian area of the country. One prominent dance was the "candle dance," which came from the village of Maroon. This dance was originally used in ceremonial practices and is still featured as the last dance of a wedding reception.

    Western Anatolia

    • The history of dance in Armenia is heavily influenced by the Western Anatolian region, located along the coast of the Black Sea. The dances commonly originating in these areas are thought to be used to pay homage to the Black Sea. They commonly feature a move known as a shoulder shimmy, to emulate the movements of fish.

    Greater Armenia

    • Dances stemming from the Greater Armenia region are noticeably different than the historic dances from other regions. These dances, typically performed in groups, are far more choreographed than others. While the purpose of these dances is unknown, historians believe that they may have been created by the Assyrians.
