Ice cube trays can be dangerous if not handled properly.

People buy plastic ice cube trays to make their own ice cubes. Plastic trays are convenient and easy to use, but before putting ice made in them into drinks, be aware of the dangers they represent.

  1. Leaching

    • The main concern with plastic ice cube trays is the issue of leaching. Plastic trays are made from chemicals, and if those plasticizers leach into the ice cube as the water freezes, the person who puts the ice cube in his beverage will ingest the chemicals. Bisphenol A---or BPA---is one of the chemicals used in plastic manufacturing that, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, is of concern if ingested.

    Function

    • Ice cube trays are not meant to be heated. Heating ice cube trays increases the chance of releasing plasticizers, but keeping them cold minimizes leaching. Ice cube trays should never be placed in the microwave or dishwasher.

    Features

    • Cold plastic can crack, causing sharp edges to cut or injure the person handling the ice cube tray. Loosening and releasing ice cubes should be done carefully to avoid breakage. If small pieces of the plastic are broken, be sure the pieces are not accidentally swallowed by children or pets.
