Lire was the official currency of Italy from 1861, until it was replaced as currency by the euro in 2002. Vatican City had its own lire, called Vatican lire, though the value was kept on par with that of the lire used in the rest of Italy. Since they were printed in smaller amounts, the higher denominations of lire are hard to come by and most frequently sought after by jewelers.
