In an article for "Dental Tribune," Jeanne M. Godett states that dental hygienists use lasers in more than 24 different dental procedures. With laser technology training courses, dental hygienists learn how to provide patients with a high standard of care.

  1. Academy of Laser Dentistry

    • The Academy of Laser Dentistry, the largest professional organization devoted to the study and use of laser technology in dentistry, provides educational courses for dental hygienists. An intensive two-day program offered at various locations in the U.S. combines lectures with hands-on training. After completing a written exam and a laser proficiency exam, students receive the Academy's Standard Proficiency Dental Laser Certification. The Academy of Laser Dentistry also offers online courses through its virtual campus.

    American Dental Hygienists' Association

    • At its annual meeting, the American Dental Hygienists' Association offers a three-hour introduction to diode lasers in combating bacteria in the mouth, inflammation and other gum diseases. The ADHA also recommends that dental hygienists contact dental schools and dental hygiene programs in states that require laser technology training.

    Laser Manufacturers' Training Programs

    • In an article for "Dental Economics" magazine, Gail S. Siminovsky recommends that dental hygienists receive certification plus training on specific laser devices from manufacturers that offer on-site training to customers who purchase dental laser devices.
