Electric Vs. Hydraulic Winch Jeep

Electric Vs. Hydraulic Winch Jeep thumbnail
A winch can help get your vehicle out of all kinds of trouble.

A winch uses a powered spool to wind heavy-load cable and pull your stuck vehicle out of sticky situations. Powered winches may be either hydraulic or electric, and there are advantages and disadvantages to both kinds.

  1. Electric Winches

    • Electricity from your vehicle powers electric winches. Electric winches are available in a wide variety of styles and options from many manufacturers. Electric winches may require electrical-system upgrades to your vehicle and can experience problems when wet.

    Hydraulic Winches

    • Pressurized hydraulic fluid powers hydraulic winches. Usually, this type of winch is connected to the existing power-steering hydraulic system. Alternatively, a separate, dedicated hydraulic system may be used. Hydraulic winches will not work unless the engine is running to power the fluid pump. However, they can work when wet or even under water. Hydraulic winches are less popular and are limited in variety of makes and models.

    Winch Power

    • Whether you choose electric or hydraulic winch power, you should select a winch with a line-pull rating about twice the weight of your vehicle. You may need to upgrade your electric or hydraulic system to accommodate sufficient winch power.
