How to Buy Things Online Without a Credit Card

How to Buy Things Online Without a Credit Card thumbnail
Not all online purchases require a credit card.

Buying items online often requires a credit card. This can be a nuisance for someone who does not own one or who would prefer not to use it over the Internet. Some sites offer alternative ways to pay for goods.

  1. Options

    • Most major merchant sites allow buyers to use payment methods other than a credit card. Auction site eBay.com gives sellers the option of accepting a number of different methods of payment, including money order, certified check or PayPal, a website in which buyers can transfer money to merchants directly from their bank accounts.

    Benefits

    • Using a check or money order instead of a credit card will protect the buyer from the possibility of having her credit card number used by someone else. Most vendor or auction websites feature a series of security measures to ensure that does not happen, but opting for a different payment method is the only true way to stay safe.

    Drawbacks

    • Although buying things without a credit card is safer, the payments take considerably longer to arrive. This can often delay shipping of the purchase, because most retailers and auction sellers will wait until payment is received before sending it to the buyer.

Not wanting my own cc # all over, if a purchase requires one, a quick trip to my bank gets me a prepaid Visa. It costs two bucks, it's activated instantly- good the moment I walk out of the bank. I first use it for my intended purchase, leaving a balance of some amount that is used quickly anyway. No hassle, and I'm only exposed for what's left on the card (usually minimal). Peace of mind is worth it- and besides, compared to some transaction fees, it's a bargain. Easier for me than some- not all banks carry, mine does- and it's right across the street.
